Chapter Ten
Jessie heard a crack and a thump and realized her brothers had not been candid with their reasons for wanting to meet Zach. âYou hurt him!â
She rushed forward and knelt beside Zach. âAre you all right?â
âI was better about five minutes ago,â Zach said, rising to his feet. He looked at her brothers with a frown. âSettle your issues, boys, and move along.â
âThe issue is Jessie,â one said, but Jessie put out a hand.
âNo, I am not the issue. Apologize! Both of you. And introduce yourselves properly. Or Iâm not leaving with you.â
They shifted, glaring at Zach. âIâm serious,â she said. âIf youâre going to be medieval about this, you might as well go home.â
They took that comment in with frowns. Just when she thought this might be the first time her brothers didnât listen to her, they each put out a reluctant hand.
âRobert Farnsworth,â the taller of the two said. âThis is my brother Cedric.â
Zach nodded. Jessie noticed he didnât touch his chin, which had to ache, judging by the redness on it and how hard Robert had hit him. âI am so ashamed of you,â she told her brothers. âZach, I do apologize. Theyâve never acted like cavemen before.â
âIâd invite you in,â Zach said, âbut youâd probably prefer to say your piece on the porch.â
âActually, weâve said all we have to say,â Robert said.
âExcellent.â Zach nodded, handing Jessieâs keys to her. âYou know where your car is, Jessie. Glad you have someone to accompany you home. I wonât worry about you.â
He closed the door.
Jessieâs jaw dropped. âZach!â She wouldnât reduce herself to banging on a manâs door to get his attention, but her heart jumped wildly inside her. âYou did not help the situation,â she told her brothers.
âI wasnât thinking,â Robert said. âIâm sorry, Jessie. Iâve just been wanting to do that so badly ever since you told me what he did to you.â
âHe did exactly what I wanted him to,â Jessie said between clenched teeth. âOh, Pepper! Iâm so glad youâre here.â
Pepper glanced up in the process of hauling a big bag out the door with her. âHi, Jessie.â She locked the front door and stood. âIâm Pepper Forrester,â she said to Jessieâs brothers. âYou must be the reason I had to put a cold cloth on Zachâs face.â
âWe should apologize,â Robert said.
âWell, I donât think itâll matter.â Pepper lugged the case down the steps. âHeâs not in a listening mood. Kind of funny and temperamental that way.â
âCan I carry that for you?â Cedric asked.
âOh, no,â Pepper said. âWe Forresters stick tightly together, so Iâll have to forego the niceties youâre offering. Goodbye, Jessie.â
âPepper!â Jessie exclaimed.
âThis is kind of an odd bunch,â Cedric said, watching Pepper wrestle with her huge bag on the way to her truck. âI feel like Iâm on a set of Gunsmoke. Jessie, I donât know what you saw in that cowpoke.â
Jessie whirled on her brothers. âLetâs just get my car and go. Youâve quite destroyed any credibility with me and worn out your welcome in Tulips.
